Atlassian Cloud as a strategic choice

With February 15, 2024 approaching and the end of support for Atlassian's server products, the need to choose between a cloud migration (Cloud Migration Support | Mind Mercatis | Atlassian Partners) and a move to Datacenter (Atlassian Platinum Solution Partner Italy, IT Services | Mind-Mercatis (mindmercatis.com)

THE CHALLENGE.

In this rather complex context, the challenges have been numerous, allowing the Mind-Mercatis team to make ample use of its expertise.

THE PROJECT.

This was of our most challenging migration projects: we carried out a thorough analysis of the Atlassian On premise ecosystem, which the client was using for the development of project management Agile-led solutions, through the Jira software and Jira core products, and of the document side represented by Confluence.

The product consisted of a hybrid solution with 2-node cluster and AWS-RDS service. 

The client was offered two possible solutions for managing its Atlassian products: 

The client chose the second option, following our advice, for three main reasons:

Mind-Mercatis guided the client in understanding the benefits of the cloud solution, just consider the maintainability of the system in the short and long term, as opposed to datacenters. 

In fact, sometimes, when not necessary for security purposes, the Data Center upgrade is delayed, not allowing to take advantage of the new features added to the next version. By choosing Cloud migration instead, there was no need to change the on premise infrastructure (which was decommissioned) and manual updates were no longer necessary, as these are done directly by Atlassian and can be tracked by following the weekly releases.

For plug-ins, their compatibility was evaluated in the planning phase, and where this was not possible, be it due to differences in functionality or lack of the same in the cloud, we proceeded with an evaluation of alternatives that could equally meet the client's expectations. 

Same goes for processes and customizations that have been planned and reengineered on the cloud.

The Results

The client has been able to take advantage of new features with each upgrade, optimizing work quality and productivity without any downtime and also receiving an up-to-date and secure environment.

Months after the migration, the customer has confirmed that choosing cloud migration has brought significant benefits, including cost optimization
